It was great to catch up with Alex Kalman of Red Bucket Films, whose BUTTONS, Vol 2, will be screening tonight, and Ben Slotover of DFF favorite Jim and Heinz series, which we'll be featuring on Saturday afternoon at ATA. It was especially a pleasure to meet the filmmakers in the competitive shorts category, whose submissions helped make this year's opening night such a success. Over the rest of the weekend we're looking forward to spending more time with Christopher McManus, Skyler Buffmyer, Cassidy Curtis and Raquel Coelho, Karen Abad, and Jon Shibata. Documentary filmmaker Franck Tabouring was on hand shooting the event for his upcoming documentary on DFF. Here's a shot of his cameraman with his sweet steadycam rig for his Canon 7D: ![]() More to come! Eric and Carlton We were so happy to be back for our second year at Anthology Film Archives, where we got to screen selections from our 2009 program, the films of Fritz Donnelly and Christina Ewald, and the premiere of the Red Bucket Films' Buttons Vol 2. The crowd was great, and we had a really nice conversation following the screening. And Disposable Filmmaker Alex Itin shot a few moments from the screening, check it out: Stairway To The Gallows from Alex Itin on Vimeo. ![]() Our first ever bike-in movie screening was a great success! A happy crowd snuggled up into their blankets and hoodies to watch the best of Disposable Films from 2008 and 2009. One thing we learned is that when there's a 40 foot screen on a wall, people stop. So we had cars on 7th St, people out for a stroll, and even the neighbors all come out and join the crowds to see the show. And we got to eat some great food courtesy of the Magic Kurry Kart, Creme Brulee Cart, Popcorn Cart, and Amouse Bouche. Check out some awesome photos from people who were there: Thanks again to everyone who came out and stay tuned for more bike-in's coming later this year! hearts, DFF *Above image courtesy of Bikes and the City Thanks to everyone who voted. After a year of preparations it was amazing to meet so many of the filmmakers, jury members, and supporters in person. A special thank you to all those who made it out. It was especially great to catch up with filmmakers Ben Slotover, Leslie Kennah & Oliver Nickels, Richie Gelles, Adam Pitel, Donna Kuhn, Eric Mika, and Ellen Lake. It was a treat to meet jury member Blake Whitman in person, and to spend some time with Dennis Klein. We were also thrilled to have Fritz Donnelly and Christina Ewald with us. And a big thank you to all who came out for the events, we are humbled by your enthusiasm and support. OK, here's the rundown of how the events went: Thursday night: DFF Competitive Shorts at the Roxie. It was an amazing night of incredible shorts. We sold out the Roxie and added an extra screening, followed by a rockin' afterparty next door at Dalva, thanks to the Guardian. Check out the pictures here. Friday night: Red Bucket Films' Buttons at ATA. We had a great turnout for this beautiful film about city life, and the poetry that surrounds you if you know where to look. The crowd loved the film, and the Q&A even more. We managed to jerryrig the projector so that we could do a live virtual talk back with RBF filmmakers Alex Kalman, and Josh & Ben Safdie from their studio in New York's Chinatown. Maybe the coolest part of the evening was that the RBF guys actually watched part of their DFF screening via video webchat as it was happening. Saturday night: Fritz Donnelly at ATA A night of shorts by the hilariously talented Fritz Donnelly and his partner in crime, Christina Ewald. We were lucky enough to have both Fritz and Christina with us for the Q&A. All the films were fantastic, though I have to admit that my personal favorite was Make that Sound. Be on the lookout for Fritz's new stuff here. Sunday afternoon: Disposable Filmmaking Panel at Oddball Films This was maybe my favorite event of the weekend. We had a great discussion about the past, present, and future of disposable filmmaking that could have gone on all day (though, as promised, we had everyone out in time for kickoff - Go Steelers!). A special thank you to our panelists Nate Weinstein, Blake Whitman, Dennis Klein, Rebecca Bortman, and Fritz Donnelly, and to Oddball Films for hosting the session. Stay posted for more DFF events coming soon! So if you're around, come on over to: KQED at 4pm. View Map (RSVP is required: eric | at | disposablefilmfest.com) Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are $10 at the door. And come celebrate with us afterwards at Bowery Electric (corner of Bowery and 2nd). Hope to see you there! |
